'Avengers: Endgame' Trailer Officially Released
It’s here. It’s finally here. In a week filled to the brim with Marvel goodness, they placed the Holy Grail right in the middle of the ooey-gooey. Marvel, after releasing the Captain Marvel trailer earlier in the week, has released the Avengers 4 trailer and, along with it, its title. It’s a title most of us are already familiar with: Avengers: Endgame. Most folks who are into this stuff surmised this way back when Strange said that word near the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Part of me thinks we should use it as a marker. I could be wrong obviously, but what if it’s a timestamp to be used in this next movie?
“We’re in the endgame now”.
- Doctor Strange, Avengers: Infinity War
I say that because we got something else in the trailer: our first glimpse of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd). It’s the surviving Avengers on Earth’s first glimpse of him since around Civil War too. If you recall, he was nowhere to be found in the last Avengers movie because he was dealing with his own affairs (that’s so weird to me, but whatever). During the end-credits scene for Ant-Man & The Wasp, Scott had just entered the Quantum Realm as the Snappening commenced (now officially called The Decimation). This was just after being lectured on potential pitfalls of being in there such as getting stuck in time loops and various temporal anomalies. Of course, his comrades disintegrated outside while he was left alone, trapped on the inside. Everyone left alive thought he was dead, until he shows up to wherever Steve and Natasha are (the Avengers compound, presumably) at the end of the trailer. That, plus the set photos that were going around awhile back showing Ant-Man in the Battle of New York on the Avengers 4 set leads us to believe time travel will be a definite plot point. Confirmed.
We were also treated to our first glimpse of Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) since Civil War. What’s he been doing? No idea. I do know that he has a sword now. I do know that he has a different outfit and head-piece on now. I do know that that’s the guise of Ronin. Ronin was the moniker Clint Barton used in the comics after the events of Civil War. It’s badass. As you know may know, a Ronin is a warrior without a master, specifically samurai. Based on his placement in the trailer during the voice-over, we can assume that his family, as seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron, was killed in The Decimation. Take from that what you will.
The opening scene of the trailer was heart-wrenching. Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) is leaving a recorded message for Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), a la Iron Man 3, and we find out he’s adrift in space in what appears to be the spacecraft he landed on Titan in. His food and water ran out days ago and the ship will run out of oxygen tomorrow. Where is Nebula? She was the only other person on Titan to survive the snap. Is she on a different part of the ship? Was whatever craft she arrived on Titan in still in good enough shape that she could use it to make her own way? The trailer shows her on a ship but it doesn’t show if it’s the same ship as Stark. It could be she’s giving him space or she’s on her own. More likely, they’re both on her ship. Whatever is happening, it appears Stark is alone and making peace with his death.
Things also look grim for the “strongest Avenger”, Thor, sitting, sulking in a room that gives me Raft vibes, but what he’s wearing throws a wrench into that. Was he arrested because he was at the center of what happened? The other Avengers that remain alive and were in Wakanda would be too, I suppose we’ll see.
We know that while the world mourns the loss of half its population, nobody except the Avengers knows what actually happened. This adds an extra layer of guilt and shame to what they’re already feeling. However, there’s a plan. I assume the plan has to do with Scott at that point in the movie, but, again, we’ll see. This movie really seems to be headed in an interesting direction. Just ask the Captain himself.
You know what else? There were rumors going around about Pepper donning her armor from the comics. As I was thinking it, I read a tweet about it. Can you imagine?
This was a teaser trailer so I wasn’t expecting much in the way of action or story, so we’ll continue speculating like mad until, during and after the next Avengers trailer release. I do know I’m definitely not excited to see Chris Evans in the Avengers Captain America suit again. Yuck. The next Marvel movie trailer will be Spider-Man: Far From Home. That’s supposed to be dropping tomorrow or Sunday. It’s a good time to be a Marvel fan!
