Wonder Woman Rakes In $200+ Million To Open
In the weeks and months leading up to its premiere this past weekend, Wonder Woman's estimated box office haul ranged from 60+ million to over 100 million. That drastic range was due to many factors, not the least of which being the stigma (it's steeped in systemic sexism, let's be real) that female led action movies or blockbusters could not rake in the big bucks. We here at The Superpowered Review are glad to report that, according to Variety, Wonder Woman's domestic take alone was $100.5 million dollars! Wanna talk global? Sure. $233 million dollars. Gal Gadot-led and Patty Jenkins-directed DCEU action blockbuster movie made $233 million dollars from Thursday night through Sunday.
Some perspective: Not only did it top Man of Steel's opening take, but the first two movies in the Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor franchises. Yep. Hashtag feminism. And this is without the super important Lebanese market. You can't see me, but I'm rolling my eyes. Some other interesting tidbits include that it had "the biggest improvement in Rotten Tomatoes score of any movie in a franchise that wasn’t a direct sequel, marking the greatest statistical leap in “franchise reputation” ever seen." There you have it folks. You don't have to have a penis to make a great action film or be Scarlett Johansson to star in one. Go figure.
The previous female-directed record holder was Sam Taylor-Johnson for Fifty Shades of Trash..er...Grey, with 85.1 million. It remains to be seen if the momentum will continue in subsequent weeks or if it will peter off in the wake of The Mummy out next week or Transformers: The Last Knight at the end of June. We'll be sure to keep you posted.
